About Cody & The Wild Horse Ranch
Welcome to The Wild Horse Ranch! Located in the Cowboy State of Wyoming, Wild Horse Ranch is situated on the Upper Southfork of the Shoshone River. The Ranch embodies all that is graceful, adventurous, romantic and wild about the wilderness of Wyoming and the great American West! Cody was founded in 1896 by Colonel William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, who at the age of 41 was one of the most famous men in the world. Cody, variously known for his exploits as Pony Express rider, scout, hunter, entrepreneur and showman had become the friend of presidents and kings, senators and governors and many of the country’s most influential businesspeople as a result of his genius and showmanship. He originally passed through the region in the 1870s. He was so impressed by the development possibilities of irrigation, rich soil, grand scenery, hunting, and proximity to Yellowstone National Park that he returned in the mid-1890s to start a town. Incorporated in 1901, Cody, Wyoming is located 52 miles from Yellowstone National Park’s east entrance. The Wild Horse Ranch was founded in 2018, when Chris & Rick Trizano purchased the neighboring ranches, “Flying H Ranch” (homesteaded on July 1, 1916) and the historic “Lazy Bar F Ranch” (homesteaded in 1916) with the intent of preserving the history and ranch lifestyle which has been the way of life here for over 100 years. While here at the ranch, we encourage you to embrace the American West, disconnect, relax and get ready for an adventure.
History of the Wild Horse Ranch
The Wild Horse Ranch is rich in history, homestead in 1916 by Max Wilde. Max was born in Franklin, Indiana on Jan 6, 1888 and moved to Cody in 1912. He settled and homestead the area known as the Lazy Bar F in 1916. He operated the ranch as both a summer dude ranch and a hunting outfit from 1924 to 1962. Max Wilde’s name became synonymous with back country of Wyoming.
Hunters from all over the United States packed into his camps year after year in search of the big game Wyoming had to offer. Famous baseball players who hunted in the famed Thoroughfare Wilderness with Max read like a scroll out of baseballs Hall of Fame located in Cooperstown NY. Leading the way was Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker & Tom Yawkey (owner of the Boston Red Sox). Others followed, Jimmy Fox, Lefty Grove, Rube Wahlberg, Bing Miller, Eddie Collins, Mickey Cochrane, Pinkey Higgins & Ted Williams.
In addition to sports stars, Max had corporate giants venture into the wilderness with him such as RW Woodruff (Chairman of the Board of Coca Cola), Bill Rae (Editor of Outdoor Life Magazine), Bill & Dick Dupont (Dupont Company) Arthur Godfrey (TV & radio Entertainer), & Gransel Fitz (Founder of the Boone & Crockett Club).
Max retired from outfitting and married Mary Brewer on March 3, 1963 and was a member of the Cody Elks Club. Max died on June 13, 1970. For the past 40 years, the ranch has been managed by Southfork legend Mike Strain. Mike married his wife Jackie in 1982 and raised their two sons Matt & Sean, on the ranch. Today the tradition that Max Wilde & Mike Strain started, continues. Horses, mules, fishing, exploring and outfitting by Constant Quest Outfitters remains a hallmark of the ranch.
